Testimonials

We highly recommend Ukrainian Credit Union to anyone seeking a banking partner that values relationships, communication, and overall excellence in service.

Over the last 20+ years I’ve banked solely with the Ukrainian Credit Union. Their rates are extremely competitive plus they provide honest investment advice. My Ukrainian isn’t the greatest, but they always make me feel like family.

UCU was my very first financial institute! They helped me when I moved to Canada in 2002. I got my first credit card here, they provided us with a mortgage, a line of credit, car loans and now we have our RRSP with UCU! I always go to them for financial support and advice. Ukrainian Credit Union is my favorite!

Besides one’s health, what can be more personal than one’s money? I want to express my gratitude for the examplary attention extended to me by the UCU. I value the timeliness of the interactions. I appreciate their warmth.

I arrived in Canada under the CUAET program and with UCU’s support I am not only successfully running my own cleaning business but am able to extend a helping hand to fellow Ukrainian newcomers.

I came to Canada almost 19 years ago. In the Ukrainian Credit Union I received my first credit card, line of credit, mortgage to buy a house that was critical for me as a newcomer.

  • Another significant benefit is the ease of conducting various transactions through UCU’s online platform. Members can effortlessly pay bills, view their payment history, transfer funds between accounts, and send and receive e-transfers without the need for physical bank visits.

In addition to these practical benefits, UCU is also dedicated to supporting the Ukrainian community.

These benefits underscore UCU’s commitment to providing a banking experience that meets the needs of its members while also supporting broader community values.

When choosing the best bank in Canada for personal banking, consider key factors such as account options, fee structures, and the availability of online banking with a mobile app.

Here’s the list of what to consider when choosing the best bank in Canada for personal banking:

  • Monthly fees, overdraft fees, and ATM fees
  • Interest rates on savings accounts
  • Convenience of online banking
  • ATM network
  • Customer service support
  • Option to speak to a live person in your native language
  • Bank’s security track record
  • Programs for newcomers

UCU personal banking offers a range of no-fee savings and no-fee chequing accounts, along with access to no-fee ATM services on UCU and Exchange Network ATMs across Canada. The UCU customers benefit from competitive interest rates on GICs, mortgages, and loans. The credit union also offers 24/7 access to accounts via the secure UCU Online Banking and the UCU Mobile Banking app.

Opening a UCU personal banking savings or checking account is straightforward and can be accomplished in two convenient ways: by visiting any of the 13 UCU branches across Ontario in person or by opening an account online in less than 5 minutes using our secure platform. We have streamlined our application process into 7 easy steps to ensure a quick and hassle-free experience.

7-Step Application Process:

  1. Welcome. This initial step confirms your eligibility for online application. You’re eligible if you are over 18 years of age.
  2. Accounts. Choose the type of account you wish to open—Savings, Chequing, or both. At this stage, you can also opt for overdraft protection for your Chequing account to cover debits when your deposit balance is insufficient.
  3. Personal Information. Input your full name, date of birth, Social Insurance Number, and contact details. Your Social Insurance Number is required for the issuance of income tax slips.
  4. Employment Details. Provide details about your employment status, employer’s name and contact info, your occupation, and your income. This step also accommodates students, retirees, or those currently not employed, ensuring everyone can apply.
  5. Compliance. To comply with government legislation, answer questions about your tax residency (especially if you are a tax resident outside of Canada) and disclose whether you or a family member is a politically exposed person, either foreign or domestic.
  6. Finalize. Review your application to ensure all information is accurate. You can edit any details at this stage. Read and agree to the Terms and Financial Services Agreement.
  7. First Deposit. After submitting your application, you will receive an email with instructions for making your first deposit to activate your membership. A $150 deposit into the UCU Membership Equity (Share) Account is required, which can be completed via Interac e-Transfer or an online money transfer from an existing bank account. This deposit can also be made by parents, family members, or friends on behalf of the applicant. Additionally, you can utilize the UCU mobile app and its ‘Deposit Anywhere’ feature to deposit a cheque.

By following these steps, you can easily set up your UCU personal banking account and begin managing your finances with convenience.

Unless you are applying from Ukraine, Poland or other country outside of Canada, to open a bank account online with UCU, the only document required is your Social Insurance Number (SIN), which is used to verify your identity. Simply enter your SIN in the designated field. There is no need to upload a screenshot of your Social Insurance Number card.

If you are applying from outside of Canada under UCU’s Welcome Ukraine Program for individuals with Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET), you will need to have a mobile phone to take a picture of yourself (selfie) and a photo of one the following documents which you must have ready: Ukraine Driving License, Ukraine ePassport, Ukraine Passport, or Ukraine Seaman’s Identification Card. Before you proceed with opening a UCU bank account online, please ensure you meet the following criteria:

  • You are either a current or prospective resident of Canada, or you are employed in Ontario. You are at least 18 years of age.
  • You must have your Social Insurance Number (SIN) ready or required document if applying through CUAET.
  • You are prepared to make an initial deposit of $150 into a UCU Membership Equity (Share) Account.
  • If travelling via CUAET, you must have a mobile telephone to take a picture of yourself (selfie)

Opening an account with UCU is easier and quicker compared to the process at most other banks in Canada, especially for immigrants. Typically, other banks may require the following documents to open a bank account online:

  • Two documents that verify your identity, indicating your date of birth and address. Immigration documents.
  • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN).

Simply log in to your UCU Online Banking or Mobile Banking app, navigate to the bill payment section, and follow the user-friendly prompts to establish recurring payments. Through the ucublu virtual no fee account, Ukrainian Credit Union Limited gives you the option of obtaining personal online banking services with no monthly or debit transaction fees or minimum balances for savings, and chequing accounts. Furthermore, there are no fees for using the UCU and Exchange Network ATMs, as well as for online and mobile app banking. UCU personal accounts that permit you to access them both online/via mobile app, and also physically through a branch, typically have debit transaction fees associated with them to cover the higher costs associated with non-virtual account access provided in-person by staff at the counters of the credit union.

Ultimately, the cost of banking services can differ depending on various elements, such as the specific account type you hold, your transaction activities, and any extra services you might engage with.

Typically, potential banking fees could be related to:

  1. Monthly account maintenance for certain types of accounts, unless certain conditions are met (e.g., maintaining a minimum balance). Fees for exceeding predefined transaction limits, such as e-Transfers, ATM withdrawals from non-network ATMs, or international transactions.
  2. Charges for additional banking services, such as issuing stop payment orders, executing wire transfers, or ordering cheques.

Managing your finances online offers multiple benefits:

  1. Simple access: Online banking allows you 24-hour-a-day access to your financial accounts. This means you can conduct transactions, such as bill payments, fund transfers, checking balances, and more, from anywhere, anytime, without the constraint of banking hours or physical locations.
  2. Real-time account monitoring: With online banking, you can monitor your account activity in real-time. You can view the session history of your transactions sorting it by deposits, amounts, cheques, dates, etc. and identify any unauthorized activity quickly by setting up automatic alerts for account activity.
  3. Ease of use: Online platforms facilitate a variety of transactions, such as transferring money between accounts, paying bills, and setting up automatic payments for recurring expenses. Such automation can significantly mitigate the risk of overdue payments and save time.
  4. Paperless transactions: Opting for electronic statements and conducting transactions online reduces the need for paper, contributing to environmental conservation.
  5. Digital record keeping: Online banking keeps all your transactions, statements, and financial documents in one place, simplifying record-keeping and financial planning.

To monitor your spending and examine your transaction history, utilize UCU Personal Online Banking or the UCU Mobile Banking app. Begin by selecting the ‘View Account Activity’ tab.

Here, you can explore the details of your transactions by organizing them according to criteria such as deposits, withdrawal amounts, cheques, and dates. This feature also includes access to your login history and a comprehensive session history, displaying all transactions executed during a particular banking session. To enhance security and stay informed about your account activity, consider activating automatic alerts. These notifications can help you promptly detect any unauthorized transactions, ensuring your finances are closely monitored and protected.
